Wow! Today was absolutely hectic. It wasn't because we didn't have more to do overall, it was because we had less people to do it. One of the normal gymnastics interns couldn't make it so what we normally divide up between five interns was divided up between four. Somehow we made it work though and got through the night without any problems (well maybe one problem which I'll talk more about later).
My day actually started with office hours which consisted of me getting stuff ready for the gymnastics meet. I put up some fliers telling people where are kids zone was and put out some programs and gymnastics camp brochures. Nothing major, but it was good I could do that during office hours because I'm not sure there would have been time for me to do it once we started all the other stuff at 4:30.
As for the meet, my first responsibility was finding five kids for our handstand contest. I found four pretty quickly, but I had to wait on the fifth one because I had to make sure the Golden Girls were ready for their pre-meet dance routine, a local gymnastics groups was ready for their pre-meet routine, and the national anthem singers were ready. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I also had to lead out the NCSU gymnastics team when they were having their names called so I was the only intern that had to wear a shirt and tie instead of just a polo. The pre-meet portion of the night was definitely the most hectic. All this stuff was happening at the same time and it seemed like I was running everywhere.
After that it was time for the hand-stand contest and luckily one of the girls I had picked earlier now had a friend so that made it five. Definitely the shortest contest I had been a part of all year. We actually had to do it twice because all five contestants basically fell down right off the bat during the first attempt. It was good though because they had fun and they all got some sort of prize.
We also did our stand t-shirt toss before the second rotation and when a Mizzou gymnast scored 9.8 or higher, delivered popcorn to some of the loudest fans, and had to get the best seat in the house ready. The best seat in the house is where I think our problem occurred. During this promotion we move a couch close to the floor for 3-4 fans to sit and watch the Mizzou gymnasts perform their floor routines. Well, tonight the gymnastics boosters chose the fans and they just so happened to be the aunt, uncle, and cousins of one of our gymnasts. I thought it was weird that family members were chosen and I told Michael who it was and he didn't say anything so I figured he knew something I didn't. Afterwards I talked with the wife of one of the gymnastics coaches and she said we were probably going to have to self-report that as a violation and that the gymnast would have to pay for the seats. I knew I should have brought up the situation more, but I didn't. Michael wasn't mad at me and said he should have caught it too.
At the end we had senior recognition where we honored our four senior gymnasts. I thought it was cool because we also honored the one senior gymnast from NCSU. I've never seen anything like that done before.
To end the night the four seniors signed autographs for fans and that was it. For the record, the team scored a season high 196.150 and beat NCSU 196.150-196.000! It was a great way to send out the seniors on their last home meet.
