Well, as you know, Saturday was my last event and my last day. It is bittersweet knowing that I will be done with the MBA program this week, but it also means I am done with this great experience. I greatly enjoyed the people I worked with and I am honestly going to miss it.
Without a doubt the biggest thing I gained from this internship experience is that I am more outgoing now. Completing my internship with the marketing department forced me to go outside my comfort zone and go up to people I didn't know and talk with them, while also making me be crazy and loud during many of our promotions. Most people that know me would be shocked (in a good way) if they saw the way I acted at times. I'm normally one of the quietest people in the room and that wouldn't work with this job and I think it will be greatly beneficial as I move forward. I believe being able to talk with people will be one of the biggest things in my sports business career and this internship gave me more experience with that in almost 5 months than I've had before.
As for whether the experience related to my academic studies, some of it did. A lot of what I did during office hours would be considered marketing research. I never assisted in designing questionnaires or anything like that, but I did find quite a bit of useful information that was used to make several decision regarding what the department was and was not going to do. Other than that I wouldn't say a lot of what I did related to my studies. However, I suppose you could also say I got a first hand experience of the importance of communication (especially in marketing activities).
My supervisor was simply phenomenal. I could not have asked for a better person to work for. If anybody else from Columbia, MO or anyone else simply wants to complete their internship with Mizzou Athletics, they cannot go wrong with Megan. In addition, on the days when Megan wasn't there or I was working with someone else in the marketing department, that other person was great too. The Mizzou Athletics Marketing Department is simply one that is great for any intern to work in.
This experience has definitely further cemented my desire to work in the sports industry. Before I completed this internship I would have never guessed that I would ever work in marketing, and while I may still never work full-time in marketing I wouldn't mind. I've always been more of a numbers guy, but this really showed me that being out there in the action is kind of fun. I'm definitely looking forward to making a career in this industry.
Finally, if other students were considering this job, I would simply advise them to take it. The people in the department are great, they know how to answer any questions you may have, will give career advice if you ask for it, and last but certainly not least, are simply fun to work with. You cannot go wrong working in this department.
